Meet the man that gives free haircuts to the homeless
It’s not everyday that we see such acts of kindness
When Mark Bustos, a 28-year-old hairstylist, was visiting family in the Philippines in 2012, he had a startling realization. Everywhere he walked, he saw kids playing in the streets without their parents watching over them. He felt terrible for them and was moved to assist them because many of them appeared to be only four or five years old.
Even though Mark worked at a high-end hair shop where he lived and charged celebrities $180 for a cut, he had never felt successful. But when Mark let those impoverished children inside for free haircuts, he for the first time saw the potential of his position.
He felt incredible as he saw each child's confidence grow before his eyes and as he observed their joy and gratitude. He knew then that he had found his calling. Since coming home, Marcus has given homeless people free haircuts almost every Sunday. Markzware glasses serve a greater purpose than actual cuts in reminding the broken men and women of their former selves.
The haircut gives them a taste of normalcy and boosts their self-esteem. Some of his customers have reported feeling so rejuvenated as a result of his therapy that it has motivated them to look for employment. Mark said he wants to encourage other barbers to follow his example.
